Nature camps for the protection of tortoises at the European Centre CARAPAX 2009

General Information:

For several years the European Centre CARAPAX for the protection, scientific research and the repopulation of tortoises has recruited volunteers to work in Tuscany. Experience is not an absolute prerequisite since motivation and a willingness to learn are sufficient For a minimum period of three weeks volunteers will participate at the management of the infrastructure and care of animals at the Centre and participate at envirnonmental education, and naturalistic research (only when there is some research running; in that case we give preference to volunteers that know already good Carapax and who are able to distinguish the diffirent species and sexes) .

Conditions for Participation

COST for participation: 189,00 Euro + 30,00 Euro membership; to pay at least 10 days before arrival (for the assicuration). All information down this page.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and in possession of health and accident insurance in case of illness or accident. They will work in small groops under the guide of the diffirent collaborators of theCentre who are directly responsible to the Centre's Director. Priority will be given to candidates who already have some experience and who speak other languages (English, German, Italian).

Organisation of accommodation and work

Travel expenses are NOT reimbursed by the Centre.
The Centre can accommodate about twenty people. Accommodation is in wooden chalets with electricity. Sanitary installations are simple, camping style. There are four outdoor showers which are discreetly placed (only cold water), a girls toilet and a boys toilet (at 5 min. walk from the living area). The kitchen is in the open air - protected by a large roof. These facilities are completely separate from the area open to the public and are reserved for volunteers.

The work is carried out five days a week, leaving two days free to allow everyone to do a little tourism in this very interesting area which has several nature reserves including the WWF Burano and Orbetello parks as well as the Maremma Park and a number of cultural centres such as Volterra, Siena, San Gimignano, Grosseto and of course Massa Ma­rittima; all situated at less than 100 km from the CARAPAX Centre. The nearest bus-stop is at 2 km from Carapax. All the surrounding towns as well as others are steeped in middle age history but above all Etruscan history.
Volunteers must be prepared to live in a community and to be able to assume the responsibilies attached thereto. At the moment the Centre is divided into distinct zones; teams will not always be composed of the same volunteers, in order to facilitate contact.
No alcoholics or drugs are allowed at CARAPAX
